Connections recommends to let common sense prevail and to build in some slack in terms of validity. Often unforeseen circumstances (weather factors, volcanoes, and threats all kinds) are the cause of a mandatory postponed return date. A credit card is required upon check-in at the hotels and also when renting a car. Please keep this in mind. We strongly recommend you to print out the Esta- or Eta permit and to have it on you while you travel to avoid problems.

  • All passengers who travel to and /or via the U.S. must apply for an electronic travel authorization at least 72 hours prior to departure. The ESTA ($ 40) procedure must be requested via the official website link https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov and paid by a personal credit card only.

  • Travellers who have visited Cuba since 12 January 2021 or who wish to travel to Cuba prior to a visit to the United States are not eligible for ESTA and must apply for a US visa at a US Consulate before travelling to the US.

  • Travellers with a non-Belgian nationality and / or travellers travelling on a foreign passport are invited to spontaneously report this matter to the Connections travel consultant and shall contact their respective embassy (s) or Consulate (ate) to obtain the latest updates concerning all current travel requirements and documents. They must apply for an electronic travel authorization at least 72 hours prior to departure via the official website link https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov and pay by a personal credit card only.

Time zones

The United States span 4 time zones:

  • Eastern (- 6 h)

  • Central (- 7 h)

  • Mountain (- 8 h)

  • Pacific (- 9 h)

Payments methods

A personal credit card is required upon check-in at the hotels and also when renting a car. The most convenient method of payment is by credit card but cash euros and dollars in small amount come in handy. Inform yourself timely, as from January 15, 2015 your Visa and/or MasterCard credit card (and possibly other types of credit cards) has automatically been set to "not for use in the US, for US car rental agencies and during cruises under the American flag".

You must then apply for a release of your credit card. This may be done prior to your arrival in the U.S. (in your bank branch or via the telephone number listed on the back of your credit card or by means of a special form available for PC banking) as well as after arrival in the US (through a withdrawal at an ATM. Please note, in this case there will be a transaction fee charged to your account). The same applies to the Maestro function in your bank card.

Discover Utah’s Five National Parks

Utah offers the unique opportunity to visit all five national parks on a single road trip. These “Mighty Five”—Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Arches, and Canyonlands—together provide an unparalleled natural experience. In Zion, you’ll hike among towering rock walls along the Virgin River, while Bryce Canyon surprises you with thousands of colorful hoodoos. Capitol Reef impresses with its Waterpocket Fold, a geological wonder of folded rock layers. In Arches, you’ll admire more than 2,000 natural arches, including the iconic Delicate Arch. Conclude your journey in Canyonlands, where deep canyons and table mountains create a rugged lunar landscape that will leave you breathless.

Adventure Activities During Your Utah Road Trip

In addition to admiring spectacular views, Utah offers countless opportunities for adventure activities. Go rafting on the rushing Colorado River near Moab for an adrenaline rush amidst impressive canyon walls. Mountain biking is one of the most popular activities in the Moab area, with world-famous trails such as Slickrock and Poison Spider. For hikers, the Angels Landing trail in Zion is a challenging yet unforgettable experience, rewarded with panoramic views. Photographers will enjoy the magical morning light at Mesa Arch in Canyonlands. Looking for more exclusive experiences? Consider a helicopter flight over Monument Valley or a stargazing session at the Dark Sky Park in Natural Bridges National Monument.

Best time to visit Utah

The ideal time for a road trip through Utah is spring (April–May) and fall (September–October). During these months, you’ll enjoy pleasant temperatures between 15–25°C, perfect for outdoor activities without the extreme heat of summer. Spring brings blooming desert flowers and higher water levels in the rivers, ideal for rafting. Fall transforms the poplars and aspens in the higher elevations into golden yellow, creating spectacular contrasts with the red rocks. Summer months (June–August) are hot, with temperatures above 35°C in the lower elevations, but more pleasant in the higher-elevation parks such as Bryce Canyon. The winter months (November–March) offer a unique experience with snow-covered red rocks, but some roads may be closed and services limited.

Combining Utah with neighboring states

A road trip through Utah pairs perfectly with visits to neighboring states. From southern Utah, it’s just a short drive to the northern rim of the Grand Canyon in Arizona, one of the world’s most impressive natural wonders. Lake Powell, on the border between Utah and Arizona, offers wonderful opportunities for water recreation amidst red rock walls. The famous Antelope Canyon, with its magical play of light in narrow crevices, is also nearby. If you’re traveling from Moab, you’re close to Colorado with its mountain landscapes and historic mining towns. For a complete Southwest experience, you can extend your trip to Monument Valley and then continue on to New Mexico with its rich Native American culture and art. These combination options make Utah the perfect starting point for a diverse American road trip.

Practical travel tips for your Utah road trip

Good preparation is essential for a worry-free road trip through Utah. Consider the America the Beautiful Pass (about $80) for access to all national parks, which is more cost-effective if you’re visiting multiple parks. Book accommodations at least six months in advance, especially in popular destinations like Springdale (Zion) and Moab. Keep in mind how vast Utah is—don’t drive more than 4–5 hours a day to allow enough time for stops and sightseeing. Always bring plenty of water (at least 2 liters per person per day) and protect yourself from the strong sun with sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. Cell phone reception may be limited in remote areas, so download offline maps before you leave. Gas stations can be far apart, so make sure your tank is always at least half full before driving into remote areas.
